The Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) was founded in 1960 by the Government of India at the premises of the former Prabhat Studios in Pune.
The FTII is currently located on the premises of the former Prabhat Studio. Prabhat Studio was a pioneer in the movie industry, moving to Pune from Kolhapur in 1933. The archaic studios of the time, which served as the production grounds for Prabhat's films, are still existent and are utilized by FTII. The historic Prabhat Studios are now heritage sites, and FTII students continue to work at the world's oldest operating film studios.
The current FTII campus was founded on property purchased by the Prabhat Film Company in 1933. The company was established in Kolhapur in 1929 and relocated to Pune four years later. It was a great and pioneering cinema company of its day, producing several notable and famous films such as Shejari, Sant Dyaneshwar, and Sairandhri, Prabhat's only color feature. This famous studio had such a legacy that it was the largest film studio in Asia at the time! The Prabhat Film Company produced 45 films in both Marathi and Hindi during its heyday.
The Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) was founded in 1960 and was previously known as the 'Film Institute of India.' It was a department of the Government of India's Ministry of Information and Broadcasting.
FTII was renamed the 'Film and Television Institute of India' (FTII) in 1971 and shortly began in-service training programs for Doordarshan, India's public broadcaster. The Television Training Wing, which had previously been based in New Delhi, relocated to Pune in 1974. Following it, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting provided full support to the institute.
Along with the name change, the FTII became an Autonomous Society under the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, governed by a Governing Council and a Director selected by the Ministry.
Today, FTII is regarded as a global center of excellence in audiovisual media and one of India's premier film institutes. FTII alumni work all over the world, from Los Angeles to Paris to Mumbai, Hyderabad, Trivandrum, Chennai, and Kolkata. They have grown in popularity and have received numerous accolades as outstanding technicians and superstars. The alumni have also received popular film and television honors ranging from the 'National Film Awards' to the 'Oscars,' as well as the coveted 'Padma Awards'.
FTII has expanded from its original five courses to eleven full-time courses in various areas of film and television, as well as a slew of short-term courses. These courses are offered both on-campus in Pune and off-campus at several locations in India.
